Charlestown Celebrates 200 years!
Charlestown will celebrate it's
bicentennial from June 21 through June
28, 2008. This Bicentennial Festival takes the place of the traditional
Founder's Day this year. However, all the traditional fun activities of
the summer celebration will still occur. These include: the prince,
princess and queen pageant, the parade, talent show, amusement rides
and booths in the city park, the 5K race, not to mention the
spectacular fireworks show. But to celebrate this 200 year anniversary
some possible special events may include: a kick-off luncheon, a street
dance, helicopter rides, antique auto show, fine arts and photography
exhibits, an old-fashioned picnic/ice cream social, storytelling, tour
of homes and gardens, the building of an early American log cabin for
displays and a balloon glow.
The Charlestown Beautification Committee, headed by Donna Coomer and
Harold Goodlett, welcomes volunteers and corporate sponsors to make
this an event a historic commemoration of Charlestown's 200th birthday.
The Charlestown Beautification Committee plans to have t-shirts,
bonnets, beautiful garden stepping stones and other items available for
sale to raise funds for the events.

Charlestown, Indiana - one of America's rivertowns?

Even many
current residents of Charlestown might be surprised to learn that
Charlestown sits less than five miles from the Ohio river (it's about
an hour walk on foot). Yet
knowledge of this proximity to the river is the key to
undestanding Charlestown's establishment, its early growth and
subsequent population boom during the World War II years.
The
settlement of the area north of the Ohio river that would eventually
become Clark County began as the Revolutionary War was ending. General
George Rogers Clark and his men were granted 150,000 acres

Named
after one of it's original surveyors, Charles Beggs, Charlestown was
the seat of Clark County (which was established April 7, 1801) from
1812 until 1878 when it was moved to Jeffersonville, Indiana.
However, the first seat of the county government was
Springville,
an early frontier town established in 1800. Springville was
located about one mile southwest of present day High Jackson Road.
Springville ceased to exsist in 1808, reportedly due to a series of
land disputes with Charlestown.
